Always keep writing…

I finished my outline on Wednesday. It was a fun process and I think there’s a lot of solid comedy and action in it. Of course, I’m not financing or airing it, so the second part of my outline will be to translate the network’s notes on it as I go to first draft. While I’m waiting on notes, I’m not kicking back and relaxing. One thing we writers always have to do is generate new material to use as samples for future work and/or to try and sell to networks. My old pal Jeff Bushell once heard how many scripts I was writing a year and said, “That’s not enough.” At the time I was writing four samples a year so I thought he was crazy, but in the end he was spot on. Jeff has gone on to great success due to his prolific nature. In the last five years I’ve taken his advice and written much more and in turn have found more success. So the lesson here is, even when the job that pays you is done or on hold while you wait for notes, don’t sit idle. Use the time to get done all the samples and projects you need to get done or even want to get done. Sometimes it’s fun just to write something you love! That’s what I’m doing today. Working on a coffee table book about my favorite city. Boston! A bit of a change from what I normally write so I’m having a blast with it. 🙂
